BEL AIR, Md. — Tre Powell knocked down five 3-pointers and Harford Community College never trailed in an 88–61 rout of the College of Southern Maryland on Saturday afternoon at APGFCU Arena.
Powell finished with a team-high 19 points on 6-for-12 shooting, sparking an Owls offense that shot 45.6 percent from the field and led wire to wire. Harford moved to 5–6 overall and 2–1 in Maryland JUCO play, while Southern Maryland dropped to 7–3, 0–3.
Kehdinga “Junior” Tutuwan added 17 points, three rebounds and three steals, and Justus Stanton came off the bench to score 18 points, including three 3-pointers, as the Owls’ depth helped push the lead out of reach in the second half.
Harford opened the game with a layup by Jacobi Harper and back-to-back threes from Powell to jump in front early. The Owls built a double-digit advantage in the first half behind hot perimeter shooting — they went 6-for-12 from beyond the arc before the break — and took a 43–33 lead into halftime.
The second half belonged to Harford’s balance and interior play. The Owls outscored the Hawks 45–28 after the break, stretching the margin to as many as 27 points with 11:54 remaining. Harford dominated the glass 36–29 and turned eight offensive rebounds into 12 second-chance points, while also outscoring Southern Maryland 38–26 in the paint.
Harper finished with 12 points and five rebounds while going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. Israel Bosenge added nine points and a team-best seven rebounds, and Donovan Peterson chipped in three points and six boards off the bench as Harford’s reserves outscored the Hawks’ bench 34–27.
The Owls were efficient at the stripe, hitting 18 of 25 free throws (72 percent), and shared the ball with 12 assists against just nine turnovers. Harford also collected eight steals and four blocks in a solid defensive effort.
Southern Maryland was led by reserve guard Donnie Stafford, who scored a game-high 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range. Amir Dade posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Shamir Taylor added 10 points, but the Hawks shot just 37.7 percent from the field and 50 percent at the free-throw line (15-for-30).
Harford will make a short trip to neighboring Cecil County for its next game, visiting Cecil College on Tuesday, Dec. 16. The Owls’ women’s team will face Cecil at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s matchup between Harford and the Seahawks at 7 p.m.
