Taegan Spier was dominant in the circle, as the starting pitcher rang up 11 strikeouts in the Perryville Varsity Panther’s 14-1 victory over the Elkton Golden Elks on Wednesday. Spier allowed four hits and one run over five innings while walking one.
Perryville got on the board in the first inning after Emma Bowman singled, scoring one run.
The Panthers scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. Spier singled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Taylor McGuirk singled, scoring one run, and Kylee Seidle homered to center field, scoring two runs.
Perryville added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Elkton dropped a third strike, Elkton committed an error, and Sarah Cantrell doubled down the right field line, each scoring one run.
Perryville scored five runs on one hit in the bottom of the fourth inning. Allanna Burchette grounded out, scoring one run, Spier drew a walk, scoring one run, Cantrell singled, scoring two runs, and McGuirk grounded out, scoring one run.
Emma Sprouse took the loss for the Golden Elks. The hurler went three and one-third innings, giving up nine runs (one earned) on nine hits, striking out four and walking none.
Cantrell led Perryville with three runs batted in. The shortstop went 2-for-4 on the day. Seidle, Cantrell, and McGuirk each collected two hits for Perryville. The Panthers didn’t commit a single error in the field. Bowman had the most chances in the field with 11.
Gia Herring went 1-for-2 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. Kenzi Watts, Elkton Golden Elks’s number nine hitter, led the team with two hits in two at-bats.
